NASA Just Launched a Telescope Built to See the Edge of the Universe

At 7:26 a.m. ET on August 30, 2026, a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket lifted off from Kennedy Space Center carrying the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope. "What a glorious dawn launch," said Roman project manager Jackie Townsend. "The ride was magnificent. It put us right where we wanted to be."

Roman isn't built to look at one thing. It's designed to survey enormous stretches of the universe at once, hunting for the fingerprints of dark matter and dark energy — the invisible forces that make up most of everything that exists, and that no one has ever directly seen. Along the way, it'll also scan for exoplanets and map galaxies near the edge of what we can observe at all.
